The big NHS prescription change…
What is the NHS Electronic Prescription Service? It is a free, confidential and safe prescription service that can make getting prescriptions much quicker and easier. Instead of having a paper prescription, your doctor can send an electronic prescription to a Pharmacy. Then all you have to do is go to the Pharmacy, where your medication will be waiting for you.
Will all prescriptions be electronic? There are some prescriptions that are not available electronically, so for these your GP will provide you with a paper prescription. You may still ask for a paper prescription should you wish to do so for your existing prescriptions.
How can a customer choose a pharmacy? It’s easy. Simply fill in the form that can be on a Pharmacy leaflet, and pop it into the Pharmacy, or simply call to register for the service. You can then use that Pharmacy for repeat or one-off prescriptions. You can change your Pharmacy of choice at any time by asking your Surgery or the new chosen Pharmacy.
Do all GP surgeries offer the Electronic Prescription Service? In the near future, it is expected that all surgeries in England will use the Electronic Prescription Service. Even though your surgery may not use the system at the moment, it’s a good idea to fill in a pharmcies form so that when the system does come in, it’s already set up for you.
